A big thank you to all who participated in the strike and the other industrial actions!

One day strike at the University of Helsinki February 28 and other industrial actions were well executed.

We got a lot of positive publicity in all the important medias both locally and nationally. Also, all social medias were filled with our slogans #meolemmeyliopisto #wearetheuniversity, messages and pictures.

A big thank you to all who participated! This could not have been done without you. Together we are strong, because #wearetheuniversity!

You may apply for the strike allowance from your own trade union

The trade unions pay out strike allowance to the members who participated in the strike. You can get more information from your own union.

The conciliation continues

The national conciliator Janne Metsämäki continues to conciliate the conflict regarding the collective agreement for the universities. Time for the next conciliation has not yet been announced.

JUKO is still ready to discuss and negotiate.

- One of the main objectives for JUKO is to receive the salary raises that are in accordance to the general level. The universities can afford this, and none of the universities were in deficit in 2016.  The cutbacks by the state have already been compensated by massive staff reductions. Also, in many staff groups, the salary development has been negative past years

- However, this is not just a salary related argument. Also, other objectives that are important to JUKO must be considered, such as the enhancement of the research opportunities and diminishing the amount of fixed-term contracts at the universities.

- Renewal of the salary system needs to be done in a working group and a lot of information needs to be gathered to evaluate the effect of the renewal to the university employees. The preparation for the renewal of the salary system must be done thoroughly. The employer may not just dictate the new salary system.

Possible strikes March 7 and March 14

Although we do not aim to go on strike again, we are still ready to help push the negotiations with new industrial action. If a conclusion is not reached by March 6, a strike will be held in Aalto-University, Hanken, University of Tampere, Tampere University of Technology, University of the Arts Helsinki and University of Vaasa.

If a conclusion is not reached by March 13, there will be a third strike held at University of Eastern Finland, University of Jyväskylä, University of Lapland, Lappeenranta University of Technology, University of Oulu, University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University.

We will once again need the We Are the University -spirit.
